Creating a Local Beer Archive from Scratch
Note: I previously submitted this article for an assignment as part of Drexel University's online course, Introduction to Archives I. I have completed the course as of December 10, 2018. During a 2016 proposal review for the California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) to implement a brewing science certificate program, Judith A. Downie, special collections and history librarian for the university, discovered that nobody in the San Diego area was actively collecting research materials from local breweries. Fearing that an “epicenter for the craft beer movement” would lose its collective memory of local beer history, she requested and received approval from Library Dean Jennifer Fabbi to begin seeking and gathering various items from breweries that would eventually become the Brewchive collection (Downie, 2018).
